Illuminated Editions: Classic Books, Reimagined Through Illustration

  • Where:

The Society of Illustrators, 128 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
  • When:

    March 26 – June 8, 2019
  • Etc:

My original drawings for The Fairy tales of Oscar Wilde will be shown alongside originals by Bill Sienkiewicz and Paul Pope, three launch projects from indie publisher Beehive Books of Philadelphia.

“Like many high-end small press publishers of the 18th and 19th century, Beehive Books takes a community-based subscription approach to funding their projects: each book is paid for via a crowdfunding campaign. This pre-funding mechanism allows Beehive to take a highly experimental, author- and artist-driven approach to publishing, including taking on projects far off the beaten track of book trade distribution. In Illuminated Editions, this enables them to select books based on the passions of their contributors, including forthcoming editions by lesser known authors like Margaret Cavendish, David Lindsay, and even Blackwood.

The artwork for three launch projects is on display until June in the MoCCA Gallery at the Society of Illustrators. The Illuminated Editions project continues, with forthcoming editions of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, illustrated by Dave McKean, J.M. Barrie’s PETER PAN, illustrated by Brecht Evens, and Margaret Cavendish’s THE BLAZING WORLD, illustrated by Rebekka Dunlap. This collective adventure in illustration, design, and publishing has only just begun…

Art as Witness – Political Graphics 2016-2018 –

  • Where:

SVA Chelsea Gallery: 601 West 26th St. 15th floor, NY
  • When:

    Reception: Thursday, October 11, 6–8PM
  • Etc:

I will take a part in this political art exhibit curated by illustrator Steve Brodner and School of Visual Arts.
The show features a diverse group of artist-activists, many of them also SVA faculty and/or alumni.

In today’s political climate, using satire to record and respond to the current state of affairs is an act of survival. This is no more apparent than in “Art as Witness: Political Graphics 2016 – 18,” a group exhibition of over 200 satirical and politically charged illustrations, cartoons and animations from 53 artists, including Milton Glaser (SVA’s acting chairman of the board), 2018 SVA Masters Series Award recipient Roz Chast and Art Spiegelman.
Each artist’s work addresses the issues and controversies surrounding the most polarizing presidential election and administration in recent history. Timed to coincide with the final weeks of the highly anticipated midterm elections, “Art as Witness” comments on the Trump presidency; the #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter and #NeverAgain movements; the opioid epidemic; and the gun-control and immigration debates to encourage activism, spark discussion and, hopefully, inspire action.

“Art as Witness” was curated by illustrator, caricaturist and SVA faculty member Steve Brodner and SVA’s Director of Galleries Francis Di Tommaso.
