WELL, AFTER 4 MONTHS….

I have finally updated my illustration section. And you can see new illos at a glance here. I know, I teach seniors at SVA how they should update their site often, and this was what I had done!! How terrible. I have been traveling a lot since July, and I am finally back to my old self (= stuck in my studio, that is..). Well, at least I had been updating my news page…, blah blah blah, some excuses..

SPECTRUM?

And a student of mine told me today in class that SPECTRUM 13is out. I have not seen it, but it is out.And I have a few pieces in there, with yes, Silver Award! (Please see right) When do I get the statuette?? I am SO looking forward to it!

I have to confess, I am secretly fantasizing of becoming a sci-fi fantasy artist. As a kid, I used to collect all the Frank Frazetta paperback covers. And I am proud to say I still own them! Does any AD out there want to risk hiring me to do a sci-fi fantasy cover? ….well maybe not.. Some things are better kept as a fantasy.

AND SOME ILLUSTRATION OUT NOW ARE…

Ooooops, I realized I haven’t written this topic in so long, but it is not that I wasn’t working…

DOMINO and TORO (Canada) every month as usual, WIRED and Business 2.0 both November, New York Magazine Wedding fall issue, Travel+Leasure Family Nov/Dec issue, PASTE issue 26, and The New Yorker this week and the next week…

And, thank you goes to the great design team at Helicopter, who initially got me the DOMINO gig. It was SO nice to meet you finally!

BACK FROM LA

Although I definitely miss palm trees in LA and great sea food in Santa Barbara, I am happy to be back home here in rainy cold NYC.Here are some pictures from the trip, Marcos Chin and me signing newly released Bliss Express at Gallery Nucleus (you can still purchase autographed copies there, I think), and us in front of, yes, palm trees!

Biggest thank you goes to: the one and only Thomas Fuchs for not giving up on me.

Also, special thank you goes to: Gary Taxali, James Jean, Esther Pearl Watson, Mark Todd, Rob Clayton, Martha Rich, Ann Field, Aaron Smith and Nathan Ota. Hope to see you all again soon!

THIS WEEK IN LOS ANGELES

Maybe I will see you somewhere in Los Angeles??
1) October 6 (Fri) – Society of Illustrators LA is hosting a talk in the evening at Otis College of Art and Design. I will be speaking along with Mark Murphy.
2) October 7 (Sat) – Guu Press’s new book Bliss Express publishing party and show at Nucleus Gallery. Marcos Chin and I will be there.
3) October 10 (Tues) – Lecture at Art Center College of Design. (This lecture is open to Art Center students only)

MURAL PROJECT IS DONE

I have worked on 11 panel mural project with “amazing and talented” Stefan Sagmeister for past five months or so. The project was finally completed last week, but it will be a while till I can actually show the panels in public. The murals will be in a public school library in The Bronx, New York next year through Robin Hood Foundation and Pentagram.

Big thank you goes to Stefan for giving me an amazing copy to work with, great art direction, helping me with type solutions, and most of all, not giving up on me during this long process. Also, thank you Pentagram, especially Josh, for letting me work in their office to finish up the panels.
