(while I was gone…) Sketchtravel Exhibit opened in San Francisco

Hi, I am back from Warsaw, Poland. While I was gone, I missed some big events on the stateside. Multiple people told me there was a huge banner of one of The Unwritten covers I illustrated at New York Comi Con. (photo on the bottom, borrowed from Tor Books Facebookpage)
On top of that, Sketchtravel‘s Special exhibition opened in San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum. the original sketchbook was auctioned off last year, so the show consists of the actual size replicas from the original. I received the sketchbook from my former roommate James Jean. So, I think our drawings are showcased right next to eachother I think. That is nice…
Show is up till February, so if you are or will be in San Francisco, please visit the museum. (photos are borrowed from Sketchtravel Facebook page)

(and here is that photo from NY Comi Con, as promised…)

Sunday in Warsaw, worshop is sold out, but come to the lecture!

I am about to head out to Warsaw, Poland to participate as a guest for Warsaw Under Construction (Warszawa W Budowie) Festival organized by Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw. There will be a lecture and workshop during my visit.
I was initially going to announce the workshop on my site, but the space was quickly filled up within the same day the museum announced it over the weekend. A good news is, that  lecture that is open to public. I will be mainly talking about outdoor advertising and illustration.
I don’t read Polish, but for those who do, here are links related to the events:
on Warsaw Under Construction official site
on Natemat.pl

It will be my second time in Warsaw, and first time in six years. I had a fantastic time during my last visit, and hoping it be the same (or better!) this time.
Thank  you for my friend and local illustrator Agata Nowicka and everyone at Warsaw MoMA for organizing and to invite me to the event. (photo below is Agata and me, six years ago during my visit).

ask me anything! NY, October 24

I talk to my students and answer their questions every week, but it’s been a while since I participate in a public event.
I will be participating in ASK THE PROS LIVE! an event organized by Society of Publication Designers in New York City on October 24.

It is a great opportunity for young illustrators, designers,  and art students who are trying to get into editorial field. Art directors and designers from various magazines as well as us illustrators will be participating to answer questions you never had a chance to ask anyone. And, the only reason we will be there is to answer them.
See you on October 24! Come with questions! And yes, please do spread the word. Thank you.

Sundance x Todd Oldham (+ a bit of Yuko)

Collaboration between Sundance Film Festival and Todd Oldham was just announced.
Among T-shirts and other products that wil be released, there will be an art book edited and curated by Todd Oldham, Sundance Film Festival A to Z I am excited to be a part of it, along with friends and fellow illustrators I admire, such as Chris Buzelli, Marcos Chin and Victo Ngai. Exhibit of the works is also scheduled during the film festival.

“An art book titled Sundance Film Festival A to Z will feature the work of 26 renowned illustrators reflecting their own interpretations of Festival films and artists representing each letter of the alphabet.”
“Oldham said, “I find independent film to be endlessly inspiring, and the Sundance Film Festival has provided a platform for many of the most creative and prolific films and filmmakers of the past three decades.”

I cannot show the full finished piece  just yet, but here is a photo of  my work in progress. My alphabet was “K”. Can you find film titles, actors and directors who’s name starts with K here? Answer will be revealed in December.

teaching in Venice, new school year, and Warsaw next!

Happy September. Hope you had a nice summer. Mine came and went, so quickly. But yes, it was nice.
I just got back from teaching 6 day illustration workshop in Venice, Italy. 13 lovely participants from all over the world: Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, Costa Rica, Brazil, US and Canada. We worked a lot, chatted a lot, ate a lot, exchanged our cultures and backgrounds, and most importantly we had LOTS OF FUN!

As soon as I got back, new school year has started at School of Visual Arts, where I have been teaching for last 9 years. Welcome students, we will work a lot and have a lot of fun as well.
For those who are in Poland, my next destination is Warsaw in mid October. So excited. More details will be posted soon.
